What is the process for obtaining an aircraft registration?
The process for obtaining an aircraft registration in Indiana is relatively straightforward. First, an application must be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aircraft Registration Branch. The application must contain the necessary information about both the aircraft and the owner. This includes the make and model of the aircraft, the serial number, the type of the engine, and the registration number. Once the application is approved, the FAA will then issue an Aircraft Certificate of Registration and an Aircraft Identification Number (AIN). The registration will be valid for three years, after which it will need to be renewed. The owner must complete a renewal application and provide all the same information as with the initial application. Upon approval, the FAA will issue a new certificate with an updated expiration date. The state of Indiana also requires that aircraft be inspected prior to registration. This is done at a local FAA-approved aviation mechanic and must adhere to the FAA’s safety regulations. After the completion of the inspection, the mechanic must provide a report confirming the aircraft is safe to fly. The report must then be submitted to the Indiana Department of Transportation with the application for registration. Once the aircraft is registered in Indiana, the owner can obtain a license to operate the aircraft. This requires an application to be submitted to the Indiana Department of Aviation, including medical documentation and logbook entries of recent flying experience. If approved, the license will be valid for one year.
