What is the process for obtaining an airworthiness certificate?

In order for an aircraft to be issued an airworthiness certificate in South Carolina, the owner or operator will need to submit an application for the certificate to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The application must include an aircraft registration form, a weight and balance form, and other applications as required by the FAA depending on the type of aircraft and its purpose. The FAA will then inspect the aircraft to ensure that it meets all safety and airworthiness requirements, such as having an airworthiness inspection program and proper marking on the aircraft. The FAA will also need to review the aircraft operations manual to determine the maximum certified weight and other operating procedures. Once the inspection is completed and the application approved, the FAA will issue the airworthiness certificate. This certificate will typically be valid for 12 months, but can be renewed at the end of the 12-month period. The certificate is required in order to operate the aircraft safely and legally. The FAA has the right to revoke the certificate at any time if the aircraft does not meet safety requirements or is not properly maintained. It is also important that the aircraft maintain current records to ensure that all safety regulations are followed. The airworthiness certificate is also necessary for pilots to be able to carry passengers in the aircraft. The FAA requires pilots to have a valid medical certificate in order to carry passengers. All pilots must also pass an FAA approved knowledge exam in order to obtain a pilot’s license.
