What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?

In order to obtain an instrument rating in Maryland, a pilot must go through a comprehensive training course that is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This includes a number of steps, such as: 1. Obtaining a private pilot certificate. This requires passing a written exam and a flight test. 2. Completing an FAA-certified instrument training course. This typically includes at least 30 hours of ground instruction, 15 hours of flight instruction and at least 10 hours of simulated or actual instrument flight time. 3. Passing an FAA knowledge test. This covers a variety of topics, such as airspace, navigation and instrument approaches. 4. Taking an FAA practical test. This includes two parts: a checkride, which consists of a knowledge test and an oral exam, and an “in-flight” exam wherein a pilot must demonstrate competency in all areas of instrument flying. Once all of the required steps have been completed and the tests passed, a pilot will earn an instrument rating, which is valid for 24 months. After that time, the pilot must demonstrate to the FAA that they have remained competent in instrument-flying skills. If successful, the pilot can renew their instrument rating.
