What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?

In Minnesota, an Instrument Rating is required for a pilot to fly in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). To obtain an Instrument Rating in Minnesota, a pilot must first hold a valid FAA Private Pilot Certificate, and must have at least a total of 50 hours of cross-country flight time, including a minimum of 5 hours of night flight and 40 hours of instrument flight time. To get the instrument rating, the pilot must then pass a written examination, also known as the Instrument Rating Knowledge Test. Once the test is successfully completed, the pilot must complete a minimum of 15 hours of instruction with an FAA-approved flight instructor. This instruction should include the following: three hours of general instrument flight maneuvers, three hours of instrument navigation, three hours of instrument approaches, and six hours of actual or simulated instrument flight. Once the necessary hours are completed, the pilot must complete a practical test with an FAA-approved examiner. This test consists of both a written and a flight-test portion that must be completed in order to demonstrate proficiency in areas such as instrument flight, navigation, and communication. Upon successful completion of the practical test, the pilot will be awarded an Instrument Rating, which is valid for four years. During the four-year period, the pilot must perform six instrument approaches (with at least one cross-country flight) in order to maintain their Instrument Rating.
