What are the regulations regarding aircraft engines?
The regulations regarding aircraft engines in Washington are outlined in Chapter 486-54 WAC, which is Washington’s Aviation and Airports code. These regulations are in place to ensure that aircraft engines are routinely inspected and maintained, therefore ensuring the safety of passengers and crew. The regulations state that aircraft engines must be inspected and maintained at least every 100 hours that the aircraft is in operation, or after any significant engine changes. The owner of the engine is responsible for ensuring that the engine remains in compliance with these regulations. Inspectors must use a checklist to check for wear and defects in the engine and its components. The checklist must be completed no less than every 12 months or after any significant maintenance. The checklist must also note any changes that have been made to the engine since it was last inspected. Additionally, the regulations require that the engine must not be operated unless it has been inspected and approved by an FAA certified Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT). The AMT must complete the form that shows they have approved the engine before it can be legally operated. Finally, the regulations require that the engine must be submitted to an approved FAA facility within 30 days of the date of operation, in order to obtain a test record. The test record must show that the engine is in compliance with all regulations, and must be kept on board the aircraft at all times.
