What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

In Texas, obtaining a helicopter rating requires a few steps. First, the applicant must have at least 40 hours of flight time, including 20 hours of solo flight and 10 hours of instruction in a helicopter. The applicant also must pass a written exam and a practical test on a helicopter as well as a medical exam. Then, the applicant will need to complete an application through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This application calls for a photograph and an endorsement from an instructor certifying that the applicant is qualified for the rating. Once the application is approved by the FAA, the applicant will then need to make an appointment with the FAA to take the practical test. The practical test consists of an oral exam as well as a flight test in a helicopter. During the oral exam, the FAA inspector will ask questions about helicopter operations, air navigation, and aviation regulations. During the flight test, the inspector will evaluate the applicant’s skill in various maneuvers with a helicopter and his/her ability to handle emergency situations. Once the applicant passes the practical test, he/she will receive an official FAA certificate. The certificate will serve as evidence that the applicant has met the necessary requirements to obtain a helicopter rating. With the rating in hand, the applicant will be free to fly a helicopter and take part in more advanced aviation activities.
