What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

In order to receive a helicopter rating in Utah, the pilot must meet certain criteria set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA requires that the pilot be at least 16 years of age, have a valid medical certificate, and have at least a private pilot certificate. With these conditions met, the applicant can then obtain a helicopter rating. To receive this rating, the pilot must complete a flight training course, which consists of a minimum of 35 hours of instruction in an FAA-approved school. This includes at least 10 hours of solo flight time, and 5 hours of dual instruction in a helicopter. The course also includes instruction in areas such as helicopter flight performance and limitations, navigation, emergencies, and night operations. The pilot must also pass a practical test, which is administered by an FAA-approved examiner. Once the practical test is successfully completed, the pilot will receive a helicopter rating on his or her pilot certificate. It is important for the pilot to remain current and proficient in order to keep the rating; this includes following FAA regulations regarding continued operational experience and undergoing a biennial flight review. With this rating, the pilot will be able to fly a helicopter safely and legally. The helicopter rating is an important step in the process of becoming a professional pilot, and it is essential to meet all FAA requirements before attempting to fly a helicopter.
