What is the process for obtaining an aircraft type rating?

In Alaska, obtaining an aircraft type rating is the process of proving to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to operate a specific type of aircraft. To obtain an aircraft type rating, you need to take a training course approved by the FAA. This course usually includes classroom instruction and hands-on flight time. Once you have completed the training course, you must then pass a checkride with an FAA-designated examiner. The checkride consists of an oral and practical test that evaluates your knowledge of the aircraft and your ability to safely fly it. After passing the checkride, the examiner will issue you a “certificate of aircraft type rating.” In Alaska, when you have obtained your aircraft type rating, you must then submit a completed FAA Form 8710-1, Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application to the FAA. This form includes information about your aircraft type rating. Once you have submitted this form, the FAA will review it and, if all requirements are met, issue you an airman certificate with your aircraft type rating. Once you have completed these steps, you will be officially certified to fly any aircraft of that type. Be sure to keep your certificate with you at all times while flying as it is the proof of your aircraft type rating.
