What is the process for obtaining an aircraft type rating?

In order to obtain an aircraft type rating in Kansas, an individual must complete a rigorous process. The first step is to obtain a medical certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certificate is required for all pilots and must be renewed periodically. Once the medical certificate is obtained, the individual must pass a written exam to demonstrate their knowledge of airmanship, navigation, air regulations, and aircraft systems specific to the aircraft type they will be flying. Next, the individual must receive ground instruction and complete simulator training hours. The ground instruction covers general regulations and systems operation for the aircraft type. The simulator training focuses on the specific aircraft type, and it is designed to develop an individual’s proficiency in the operation of the aircraft. Finally, once the individual has completed the written exam and simulator training, they must pass a practical test with an FAA-designated examiner. This test is conducted in the aircraft type and requires the individual to demonstrate their knowledge of the aircraft’s systems, maneuvers, and general airmanship. Upon successful completion, the individual will be granted the aircraft type rating.
