What is the process for obtaining an aircraft maintenance engineer certificate?

In Texas, anyone who wishes to become an aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) must first obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certificate. To do this, applicants must pass a knowledge test covering aeronautical regulations, aircraft maintenance, mechanical skills, and human factors. Applicants must also obtain an FAA medical certificate and complete a fingerprint based criminal history records check. Once applicants have passed the knowledge test and have the FAA certification, they can then apply for their Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) Certificate. The FAA requires applicants to provide evidence of course completion, such as a recurrent training program or a copy of the annual maintenance logbook, before issuing the AME certificate. Applicants must also demonstrate a minimum of 18-months of experience performing aircraft maintenance. Applicants must also successfully pass an oral and practical examination given by the FAA. The oral examination is designed to assess the applicant’s ability to understand aircraft maintenance principles and concepts, as well as demonstrate mastery of the applicable regulations. The practical examination is designed to evaluate the applicant’s ability to perform corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance operations. Once the FAA has approved the application, the aircraft maintenance engineer certificate will be issued. This certificate is valid for two years and must be renewed before it expires.
