What is the process for obtaining an aircraft maintenance engineer certificate?

In Texas, anyone who wishes to become an aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) must first obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certificate. To do this, applicants must pass a knowledge test covering aeronautical regulations, aircraft maintenance, mechanical skills, and human factors. Applicants must also obtain an FAA medical certificate and complete a fingerprint based criminal history records check.
