What are the regulations regarding aircraft maintenance records?
In Michigan, pilots and aircraft owners must keep maintenance records for any aircraft that is used for commercial purposes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandates that all aircraft undergo regular inspections and routine maintenance. Maintenance records must be kept for at least two years, and must include records of all servicing, repairs, changes, overhaul, modifications and preventive maintenance procedures performed on the aircraft. Maintenance records should also include the date of the maintenance, a detailed description of the work performed, the signature of an appropriately qualified person who performed the work and any other information needed to ensure that the maintenance work meets the regulatory standards for maintaining airworthiness. In addition, the FAA requires aircraft owners to keep records of aircraft parts that have been replaced. When aircraft parts are replaced, an entry must be made in the aircraft’s log book that includes the type, serial number and date of installation of the part. The FAA also requires aircraft owners to keep track of all airworthiness directives issued by the FAA, which are special instructions that detail how certain issues or problems with an aircraft should be addressed. All maintenance records must be kept in a manner that allows them to be easily consulted and understood in the event of an accident or other emergency. The FAA may require a pilot or aircraft owner to produce maintenance records in order to prove the airworthiness of an aircraft. If a pilot or aircraft owner is unable to produce the required records, the aircraft may be grounded. Thus, it is important for pilots and aircraft owners to keep accurate and up-to-date maintenance records.
