What are the regulations regarding aircraft maintenance records?

In North Carolina, aircraft owners and operators are required to maintain accurate records of all maintenance, inspections, repairs and alterations of the aircraft and its components. This includes records on the airframe, engine, propeller, instruments, and appliances as well as records of all major repairs and alterations made to the aircraft. Each aircraft’s maintenance records must include the make, model, serial number and type of aircraft, the total airframe time in service, the date of each inspection or maintenance, the type of inspection or maintenance, the person or organization performing the work, and any maintenance discrepancies found and the corrective action taken. Aircraft owners are also responsible for completing a form known as a 100-Hour or Annual Inspection, which verifies that the aircraft is airworthy and that all of its required maintenance has been completed in accordance with the aircraft’s operating manual. The form must be signed by the person performing the maintenance and must be kept in the aircraft’s maintenance records. The records must be present whenever the aircraft is operated. The records must be kept on the aircraft or with the operator, and are subject to inspection by an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector or an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner. Any discrepancies found must be corrected immediately. Failing to produce the aircraft’s maintenance records or maintaining inaccurate records could result in a fine or other penalties.
