What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

In order to obtain a helicopter rating in the state of Illinois, you must first meet the minimum eligibility requirements as outlined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This includes having at least 250 hours of total flight time and having a current medical certificate. Once the eligibility requirements have been met, you can apply for a helicopter rating. The application process will involve submitting the appropriate paperwork to the FAA as well as passing a comprehensive written exam. Once the paperwork has been submitted and the written exam has been successfully completed, you will be required to take an oral examination with an FAA-designated examiner. This exam will cover a variety of topics, such as instrument flying, weather, navigation, aircraft systems, and other aviation principles. Upon completing the oral exam, you will then be issued a temporary helicopter rating, which is valid for up to 90 days. After the temporary rating has expired, you will be required to take a practical test with an FAA-designated examiner. During this test, you will demonstrate your ability to safely operate a helicopter and complete various flight maneuvers. Once you have successfully passed the practical test, you will be issued a helicopter rating which will be valid for 24 months. At the end of this period, you will be required to take a proficiency check to maintain your rating.
