What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

The process for obtaining a helicopter rating in Missouri is similar to the process of obtaining a general aviation pilot’s license. First, you must obtain a student pilot certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by providing proof of age, a valid driver’s license, and a medical examination. After meeting these requirements, you must receive ground school instruction and pass an FAA written exam. Following ground school, you must complete a minimum of 40 hours of flight instruction with a certified Flight Instructor (CFI). During the flight instruction, you will learn key skills necessary for flying a helicopter, such as basic aircraft control, abnormal situations, and emergency procedures. Once you complete your flight instruction and receive a sign-off from your CFI, you can then schedule a practical exam with an FAA designated examiner. The practical exam will test your knowledge and flying skills in a variety of scenarios. During the exam, you will demonstrate practical maneuvers with the helicopter, as well as complete an oral exam with the examiner. Upon successfully passing the practical exam and receiving a passing score on the written exam, you will be awarded a helicopter rating and can apply for a Commercial Pilot Certificate. With this rating, you will be able to operate a helicopter, as well as receive compensation from commercial operations. Be sure to stay current with all FAA regulations and requirements in order to fly safely and legally.
