What is the process for obtaining a flight instructor certificate of authorization?

In order to obtain a Flight Instructor Certificate of Authorization (CFI-A) in Kansas, a few steps must be taken. First, an individual must complete all requirements of FAR Part 141 Flight Schools. Additionally, the individual must meet the existing standards for obtaining a privality pilot certificate. This includes completing an FAA-approved pilot ground school course, passing an FAA knowledge test, logging a sufficient number of flight hours, and passing a practical test. Once these requirements are met, the individual must then fill out FAA Form 8710-1 (Airman Certificate and/or Rating application) and submit it to the appropriate FAA regional office. Along with the application, the individual must also include a copy of the applicant’s passport, driver license or other valid identification, along with any necessary ratings. The FAA will require that the individual also include a copy of the Flight Instructor Certificate or Flight Instructor Ratings Certificate. After the necessary materials are submitted, the individual will need to pass a Flight Instructor Knowledge Test, as well as an oral and practical Flight Instructor Evaluation. Upon successful completion of both tests, the FAA will issue a CFI-A to the applicant. Once in possession of the CFI-A, the individual may begin to fly as a flight instructor in accordance with FAA regulations. However, it is important to note that the certificate is valid for only two years, at which point the individual will need to renew the certificate in order to continue flying. As such, it is important to remain up to date with all FAA-required training and certifications in order to maintain a valid certificate.
