What are the requirements for aircraft navigational equipment?

In South Carolina, all aircraft must have the navigational equipment required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This equipment must comply with the FAA regulations and standards. The specific requirements for navigational equipment depend on the type of aircraft. For example, when operating an aircraft with a maximum weight of more than 12,500 pounds, the navigational equipment must include an automatic direction finder, instrument landing system, navigation radios, transponder, and a distance measuring equipment. Additionally, the FAA may require a Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation system be installed for some aircraft. This system uses satellites to pinpoint the aircraft’s location and provide navigational information. The navigational equipment must also be regularly maintained and inspected to ensure it is in good working order. To ensure this, the FAA requires aircraft to keep a current logbook or maintenance record logging all of the inspections, repair, and modifications done to the equipment. Finally, aircraft pilots must be trained and licensed to use the navigational equipment as well. This includes being familiar with the rules and regulations outlined by the FAA as well as the specific navigational equipment in use. To obtain a pilot’s license, a pilot must demonstrate proficiency in and knowledge of the aircraft and its navigational equipment.
