What is the process for obtaining a seaplane rating?

Obtaining a seaplane rating in Indiana is an involved process. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifies seaplane pilots in the United States. To become certified, pilots must demonstrate mastery of seaplane-specific procedures, operations, and regulations. To begin, a pilot must obtain a minimum of six hours of seaplane instruction from an FAA-certified instructor. These hours must cover the topics of normal and crosswind takeoffs and landings, water safety, far field maneuvering, and more. Pilots must also pass a written exam as well as a practical test. Once a pilot passes the instruction and testing, they can apply to the FAA for a seaplane rating. To do this, pilots must complete FAA form 8710-11 and submit it to the FAA’s Airman Certification Branch. Once the application is processed, the FAA will issue a pilot certificate and ratings. Along with the required instruction, applicants must also hold either a Private Pilot Certificate or higher to be eligible for a seaplane rating. Additionally, applicants must also be at least 16 years old and hold a current third-class medical certificate. Anyone interested in becoming a seaplane pilot should always remember to check the Indiana state aviation regulations for any additional requirements. Safe flying is always the number one priority.
