What is the process for obtaining a seaplane rating?
In North Carolina, obtaining a seaplane rating is a relatively straightforward process. First, the applicant must be at least 17 years old and have a valid driver’s license and a current pilot certificate. To begin the rating process, the applicant must submit a Seaplane Rating Request form, a photocopy of their pilot certificate and a copy of their medical certificate to the North Carolina Division of Aviation. The applicant must then pass a written test which covers the knowledge and skills pertaining to seaplane operations. The applicant must also complete an oral exam with either a Designated Pilot Examiner or a Certified Flight Instructor. During the oral exam, the applicant will need to demonstrate their knowledge and skill level in areas such as maneuvers, navigation, emergencies, and takeoffs and landings. The applicant then will need to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in the air. This usually requires two to three hours of flight training and will include takeoffs, landings, and a variety of maneuvers particular to seaplanes. The applicant must also pass an in-flight checkride to demonstrate their proficiency. Once they have successfully completed the required tests and checkride, the applicant will be issued a seaplane rating, which is valid for the life of the pilot certificate and does not need to be renewed.
