What is the process for obtaining a seaplane rating?
In order to obtain a seaplane rating in Kansas, you must be at least 16 years of age and possess a valid pilot license. The rating allows pilots to safely and legally operate seaplanes around the state. To receive the certification, you must first obtain an aviation medical certificate. Depending on the type of pilot license you have, different medical requirements may apply. The next step is to take a seaplane knowledge written test at a testing center. Before taking the exam, you need to obtain a copy of the FAA’s “Seaplane Operations Handbook” and study the material. Once you pass the exam, you can apply for the seaplane rating. Now you need to find an instructor with the appropriate qualifications and experience. Once you’ve found an instructor, you’ll need to complete the appropriate seaplane training. This will involve both classroom instruction and flight training. Your instructor should provide you with a Seaplane Proficiency Checklist prior to the first flight. Once you’ve completed the training, you’ll take a check ride with an FAA-designated examiner. If you pass the check ride, you’ll receive your seaplane rating. You will then be able to legally and safely fly seaplanes in Kansas.
