What is the process for obtaining a multi-engine rating?

In order to obtain a multi-engine rating in Kansas, a person must meet certain requirements. To begin, the individual must have at least a private pilot certificate or higher. If the individual is applying for the aircraft type rating, the individual must also possess a medical certificate and the aircraft type rating must be endorsed to the individual’s pilot certificate. After meeting the prerequisites, the individual must complete a flight training program for the multi-engine rating from a certified flight instructor. The individual must demonstrate knowledge and pass a written exam in order to be eligible for the rating. Finally, the individual must pass a practical test. The practical test consists of an oral exam and a flight test. The individual must demonstrate their proficiency in aircraft operations including takeoff, climbing, and descending. The individual must also demonstrate their skill in performance maneuvers including stalls, unusual attitude recoveries, and emergency procedures. Once the individual has completed all the requirements, they will be issued a multi-engine rating that will be added to their pilot certificate. This rating will allow them to operate aircraft that require more than one engine. It is important to note that the individual must re-qualify for this rating every two years.
