What are the regulations governing air traffic control personnel?
In North Carolina, air traffic controllers are subject to the same set of regulations as those enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). All air traffic controllers must be certified by the FAA and must be recertified every two years. In addition, the FAA requires that air traffic controllers be trained in aviation safety and security, surveillance and navigation procedures, communication protocols, aircraft separation techniques, and flight data management. The FAA requires that all air traffic controllers be 18 years of age or older. All controllers must be able to pass a physical and mental evaluation which is conducted prior to being hired. Furthermore, air traffic controllers must demonstrate proficiency with the equipment that they will be using. They must understand the rules and regulations of the National Airspace System as well as the procedures for reporting any irregularities to other air traffic control personnel. In addition, air traffic controllers must adhere to the regulations governing their duties. This includes notifying other personnel of changes in the air traffic control environment, following the established procedures when providing aircraft separation services, and ensuring that all orders are followed according to the regulations. Finally, the FAA requires that all air traffic controllers have a valid medical certificate. This must be renewed on a regular basis, and controllers must be familiar with the medical regulations that govern their duties. All controllers must also adhere to the standards set forth by the FAA regarding the use of drugs and alcohol.
