What are the rules and regulations regarding pilot medical examinations?

In Kansas, pilots must abide by the medical examination rules of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A medical examination must be obtained from an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) in order to obtain a medical certificate. Examinations are required every two years for pilots under 40 and every year for pilots over 40 years of age. During the medical examination, the AME will check a pilot’s vision, color vision, hearing, blood pressure, pulse, lung functions, and heart. The AME will check for any physical or mental deficiencies that could impair a pilot’s performance. The pilot will also be asked to disclose any medications or drug use. The AME will review the pilot’s medical history to check for any past medical issues that may affect the ability to fly. The pilot must also disclose any past or current substance abuse issues, including alcohol or drug use. If a pilot fails the medical examination, they may be issued a temporary medical certificate valid for up to six months or a denial letter. Depending on the finding, the FAA may issue a special issuance authorization which allows a pilot to fly subject to certain restrictions. In summary, pilots in Kansas must abide by the FAA’s medical examination rules in order to be eligible to fly. During the medical examination, the AME will review a pilot’s medical history and check for physical and mental impairments. If a pilot fails the medical examination, there may be options for a temporary or permanent certificate.
