How do I register my business with the IRS?
To register your business with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), you will need to file Form SS-4, the “Application for Employer Identification Number”. Form SS-4 can be found online or requested by calling 1-800-829-1040. To complete Form SS-4, you’ll need to provide the name and address of your business, its legal form (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, etc.), and the name and Tax Identification Number (TIN) of a responsible party, such as the owner or Managing Member. You’ll also need to provide your business’s estimated annual gross receipts (sales) and the number of its employees. Once you’ve completed the form, mail it to the address listed on the form for the IRS office where your business is located. After your form is received by the IRS, you will receive an Employer Identification Number (EIN). An EIN is like a Social Security Number for businesses, and it is needed for any company with employees or which will file taxes. Once you have your EIN, you may need to register your business with the Washington Secretary of State or other state agencies or local governments. Contact the Washington Secretary of State for more information. The IRS also recommends that you consult with a local accountant or tax attorney when registering your business. These professionals can help you understand the tax and legal implications of your business formation.
