How do I select a registered business address?

In New Mexico, selecting a registered business address is called “designating a registered agent”. This is the person or business entity that will be the designated point for receiving legal notifications and processes. When someone or an entity is designated as a registered agent, they will be responsible for providing the state with a physical address for the business. First, it is important to determine whether the business is required to designate a registered agent, as this requirement is based on the type of business entity. Generally speaking, most businesses that file with the New Mexico Secretary of State must designate a registered agent. Next, the business should decide who will serve as the registered agent. An individual can be a registered agent, provided they meet the following qualifications: (1) they are 18 years of age or older, (2) they are a resident of New Mexico, and (3) they possess a physical street address in the state. It is also possible for the business to designate another entity, such as a corporation or a limited liability company (LLC), to serve as its registered agent. Lastly, the business must provide the Secretary of State with the name and physical address of the registered agent. This information can be provided during the filing of the entity formation paperwork. Once it is submitted, it becomes a public record.
