Are there any special considerations regarding the use of embryonic stem cells in research?
Yes, there are special considerations regarding the use of embryonic stem cells in research in Kansas. The Kansas Stem Cell Research and Cures Act of 2005 permits researchers to study adult and embryonic stem cells, as long as they are derived from in-vitro fertilization clinics and are stored for longer than 14 days. Additionally, the research must be conducted in strict accordance with FDA regulations and must be approved by an institutional review board. In addition, the Act prohibits the use of stem cells for reproductive cloning and the creation of human-animal hybrids. The Law also requires that researchers obtain informed consent from the donor of the stem cells and that they document the source and type of cells used in any research trials. Moreover, it is illegal to buy, sell, or use stem cells for any purpose other than research or medical therapy. As such, any researcher who wishes to use embryonic stem cells must be mindful that such research is strictly regulated and must follow all applicable laws in order to remain within the bounds of the law.
