What is an obstetrical brachial plexus injury, and how does it affect a baby?
An obstetrical brachial plexus injury, often referred to as OBPI, occurs when there is damage to the nerves that run through the shoulders of a baby during delivery. This injury is most common when the baby’s shoulder becomes trapped against the mother’s pelvis as it passes through the birth canal. These injuries can also result from a doctor using excessive force or pulling the baby too hard with the use of forceps as it is being born. The effects of an OBPI vary depending on the severity of the injury. In less severe cases, the baby may experience temporary numbness or weakness in the affected arm, usually in the form of Erb’s palsy or Klumpke’s palsy. In more severe cases, the baby may have permanent nerve damage, which can cause lifelong problems with arm movement, strength, and sensation. Tennessee has specific laws that protect those who have suffered birth injuries, including those caused by OBPI. If a family believes that their baby has suffered an OBPI due to medical negligence, they may be able to file a claim in order to seek compensation for damages. If successful, they may be able to receive money to cover medical expenses, lost wages, and other costs associated with the injury.
