What is an obstetrical brachial plexus injury, and how does it affect a baby?

An obstetrical brachial plexus injury is a type of birth injury that affects a baby’s nerves in the shoulder and arm area. It occurs when the shoulder is impacted during the birthing process, resulting in damage to the network of nerves in the baby’s shoulder and arm. This damage can range from mild to severe and can lead to lasting physical disabilities. The most common type of obstetrical brachial plexus injury is known as Erb’s palsy. Erb’s palsy is a form of paralysis that affects the shoulder, arm, and/or hand of the affected baby. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, including a weak grip, limited range of motion, or decreased sensation in the affected arm. In more severe cases, the baby’s arm may be permanently paralyzed. As with any birth injury, an obstetrical brachial plexus injury can have a serious impact on the life of the affected baby and his or her family. The resulting physical impairments and disabilities can greatly reduce the quality of life of the affected baby. In some cases, medical costs associated with the injury and any necessary rehabilitation or treatments can be quite expensive. In Utah, families of babies affected by a birth injury, including obstetrical brachial plexus injuries, may be eligible to receive compensation for medical costs and other damages which were the result of medical negligence. This compensation can help families cover the costs of medical care and rehabilitative treatments for their child, as well as other financial losses due to the injury.
