What is the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard?
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards created to ensure the safe handling of credit card information. It was developed by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council, a consortium of major credit card companies such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB. The standard is designed to protect cardholders from fraud and theft of their financial information. PCI DSS is a set of 12 different requirements that must be met by any business or organization that processes, stores, or transmits credit card data. These requirements include measures that must be taken to ensure that cardholder data is adequately protected from cybercrime, including firewalls, encryption, and other security measures. In addition, businesses must also have a secure system for collecting and storing customer information, and must follow certain procedures when processing customers’ payments. In Indiana, companies must comply with PCI DSS in order to process credit cards. Businesses that fail to comply with these standards may face fines from card issuers or be barred from processing transactions. Additionally, they may be required to reimburse customers for any fraud or theft that occurred as a result of not complying with the PCI DSS.
