What is the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards established by the major credit card companies for entities that store, process, or transmit credit card information. The PCI DSS was created in 2006 to provide a uniform set of security practices that all entities dealing with credit cards must meet in order to accept credit card payments. The PCI DSS requires these entities to ensure the ongoing security of their networks and systems, including employee training, testing and validation of security measures, and regular auditing. In North Dakota, assembly bill 1378 was passed in 2019 which requires all businesses that accept payment cards and maintain certain records to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. This law applies to any business that keeps records containing personal information, including payment card data, for longer than 60 days after the transaction. In order to comply with this law, businesses must have a comprehensive security program that implements the requirements of the PCI DSS. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard is an important safeguard for businesses, customers, and the credit card companies that process these payments. By requiring businesses that handle sensitive customer information to maintain a secure environment, North Dakota is helping to ensure that customers’ personal and financial data remain secure.
