What are the legal requirements for registering a boat?
In the state of Washington, all motorized boats and sailboats 13 feet or longer must be registered with the Department of Licensing. Additionally, any boat rented or leased out of Washington must also be registered. The first step of registering a boat is to provide proof of ownership to the Department of Licensing. This can be a bill of sale or title. All boats that are powered by an internal combustion engine must have a valid Vessel Identification Number (VIN). Boats with an outboard engine will only need a Hull Identification Number (HIN), but some older vessels may need a VIN as well. After providing proof of ownership, you must fill out a few registration forms and submit them with proof of your identity and payment of the registration fee. In Washington, valid registration is good for three years. At the start of the third year, you must renew your registration. This means filling out and submitting renewal forms, proof of identity, and paying the registration fee again. Finally, it is important to note that in the state of Washington, all boats, regardless of size, must have valid boat insurance. The minimum coverage must include Property Damage Liability, Bodily Injury Liability, and Uninsured/Underinsured Liability. In conclusion, boaters in Washington must register their boats with the Department of Licensing, submit proof of ownership, fill out registration and renewal forms, provide proof of identity, and pay registration fees. Boat owners must also carry valid boat insurance that meets at least the minimum requirements.
