What are the most common types of injuries caused by a boating accident?
Boating accidents are unfortunately common in Florida, and with them come numerous injuries. The most common types of injuries caused by boating accidents are contusions, sprains, strains, and fractures. Contusions, or bruises, typically occur due to blunt force trauma from being hit by the boat or being thrown against hard surfaces. Sprains and strains occur due to the same type of blunt force trauma, but also from overstretching and stressing of muscles, bones, and tendons. Fractures, or broken bones, can also occur from a boating accident. These can range from minor breaks needing a cast to major breaks requiring surgery. Another common injury due to boating accidents is hypothermia. When a person is thrown into cold water, their body temperature can drop significantly which can lead to hypothermia and even death. Other common injuries caused by boating accidents are neck, back, and spinal cord injuries, especially when someone is thrown out of the boat. They may suffer from whiplash, torn muscles or ligaments, and other soft tissue injuries. Regardless of the type of injury, it is important to seek medical attention immediately if you are involved in a boating accident.
