What are the short-term effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI)?
The short-term effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) vary in severity, but can be quite serious. Most commonly, people with TBI experience difficulty with their memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills, as well as changes in personality, behavior, and sensory functions. Other short-term effects include headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and problems with speech and vision. More serious short-term effects of TBI can include seizures, a coma, or even death. The risk for seizures or coma increases if the injury results in vascular or structural damage to the brain. If a person regains consciousness after a coma, they may experience a range of cognitive issues such as confusion, memory loss, language difficulties, and difficulty with concentration and comprehension. In some cases, people can also experience depression, anxiety, and mood swings following a TBI. Psychological issues, such as decreased self-esteem, may also occur. Depending on the severity of the injury, a person may need to receive ongoing care or rehabilitation to address physical, cognitive, and emotional difficulties. In North Carolina, people who have suffered a TBI may be able to seek financial compensation through a brain injury law claim. Typically, claims must be filed within three years of the injury or illness in order to be successful. In the event of a wrongful death, the statute of limitations is two years.
