What is a traumatic brain injury (TBI)?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a type of injury caused by an outside force to the brain. It can occur when an object strikes or penetrates the head, as in a car accident or a fall, or when the brain is shaken, as in a blast injury from explosives. The severity of a TBI can range from mild to severe and can cause a variety of physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural changes. Signs of a mild TBI can include a brief loss of consciousness, confusion, disorientation, blurred vision, nausea, dizziness, and a headache. In a moderate to severe TBI, a person may experience prolonged unconsciousness, seizures, severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, incoordination, and may even enter a coma. Brain injuries can have long-term effects, including problems with thinking, memory, movement, sensation, behavior, and emotion. In Mississippi, Brain Injury Law protects those who have been affected by a traumatic brain injury, by providing legal representation and helping them receive financial compensation for the pain and suffering caused by the injury. The law also assists in preserving the evidence related to the incident that caused the injury.
