What is the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA)?
The Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) is a law regarding electronic signatures and how they can be used in the state of Louisiana. UETA is an effort to make electronic signatures, and transactions conducted over the internet, legally binding. UETA applies to all forms of electronic communications, such as email, text messages, online forms, and other electronic records. Under UETA, an electronic signature is defined as an electronic sound, symbol, or process attached to or logically associated with an electronic record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent of signing the record. For a signature to be considered valid, the person who signed must have the intent to sign the document and have knowledge of the transaction. UETA is meant to protect businesses from fraud or misrepresentation. It also preserves the integrity of contracts and transactions that have been completed over the Internet. This law is meant to make electronic signatures and online transactions just as valid as signatures and transactions that are executed in person. Additionally, UETA allows businesses to transact online with confidence, knowing that the contract is binding and legally valid.
