What is the difference between business law and corporate law?

Business law is a broad type of law that covers the rights, responsibilities, and regulations of businesses and individuals engaging in commercial activities. It includes a wide range of legal topics such as contracts, tort law, consumer protection, antitrust law, intellectual property, business formation, and more. Corporate law, also referred to as company law, is a specific type of business law that focuses solely on the regulation of businesses who wish to incorporate as entities. This includes the formation of corporations, defining the legal structure of the organization, governance procedures, and other related matters. When a business intends to incorporate, they must comply with certain laws which is why corporate law exists. Additionally, corporate law regulates internal matters within the corporation such as voting rights, shareholder rights, and other matters within the corporation. In Maryland, those wishing to incorporate must abide by the Maryland General Corporation Law; a set of state rules that govern the formation and operations of a corporation. This includes rules about filing Articles of Incorporation with the state, appointing directors and officers, setting up management powers, and other matters. To sum it up, business law is a broad set of laws that applies to any commercial activity, while corporate law is a specific branch of law that applies to businesses that are incorporating and are structured as a corporation.
