What are the major state and federal labor laws?
Colorado has a number of state and federal labor laws designed to protect workers and ensure they are treated fairly. At the federal level, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the main law governing wages, hours, and other workplace protections. The FLSA requires employers to pay employees at least the minimum wage, provide overtime pay, and provide a safe and healthy working environment. Employers are also prohibited from discriminating against employees on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, disability, and other characteristics. At the state level, Colorado has its own labor laws that protect workers. Colorado’s Minimum Wage Order requires employers to pay at least the state minimum wage, currently set at $12 per hour. Colorado’s Pay Equity Law prohibits employers from paying employees of one gender less than similarly situated employees of the opposite gender. Additionally, the Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act requires employers to provide paid sick and safe leave for their employees. Both state and federal labor laws are enforced by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. This agency investigates wages, hours, and working conditions to ensure employers are in compliance with the applicable laws. If employers are found to be in violation of any labor laws, they may be liable to pay fines and restitution to affected employees.
