What is the International Convention on the Rights of the Child?
The International Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international agreement that sets out the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of all children below the age of 18. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 and has since been ratified by every country in the world except for the United States and Somalia. The Convention recognizes that children have particular rights because of their status as minors. These rights include the right to protection from all forms of violence and exploitation, the right to education, the right to freedom of expression and association, the right to health care, and the right to an adequate standard of living. The Convention also recognizes that children are entitled to protection from discrimination, as well as the right to have their best interests considered in government decisions that affect them. In Texas, child advocacy laws are based on the Convention’s principles. These laws cover a wide range of areas, from protection against abuse and neglect to access to quality education and healthcare. Moreover, Texas has established organizations that work to promote and protect the rights of children, including the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and the Texas Child Advocacy Council. These organizations work to ensure that the Convention’s principles are respected and that children’s rights are protected in Texas.
