What are the penalties for illegal cannabis possession?

In Mississippi, cannabis possession is illegal and offenders can face a range of penalties from a warning or ticket to a fine and/or jail time. The penalties for illegal possession depend on the amount of cannabis found in an individual’s possession and any prior convictions. For less than 30 grams, the offender may get a warning or a ticket. A first-time offender can face up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $250. For subsequent offenses, the penalty increases to up to six months incarceration and/or a fine of up to $500. If an individual is found in possession of more than 30 grams, a conviction can lead to a maximum of three years in prison and/or a fine of up to $3,000. In addition, if an offender is found in possession of greater than 250 grams (about 8.8 ounces), the individual can be charged with possession with intent to distribute, which carries a minimum penalty of 3 years in prison and a maximum of up to 30 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $50,000. Cannabis laws in Mississippi are very strict and offenders face serious penalties for illegal possession. If an individual is found to possess cannabis, they should consult an attorney to ensure they are aware of their legal rights.
