What are the penalties for illegal cannabis possession?

In Tennessee, cannabis possession laws are in place to penalize people for having illegal cannabis products. Those caught with a half ounce or less of cannabis in their possession can be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail and fines of up to $2,500. Possession of larger quantities can lead to more serious charges such as a felony with greater penalties and fines of up to $5,000. Subsequent offenses will also incur harsher punishments. Fifteen grams or more of cannabis can lead to a felony charge and a sentence of between 1 and 6 years in prison with possible fines of up to $500,000. Additionally, in Tennessee, if a minor is caught with cannabis, they can be charged with a delinquency of a minor and face serious consequences. Depending on the age of the minor, the charges can range from a Class B misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $500 and a maximum imprisonment of 6 months to a Class A misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $2,500 and a maximum imprisonment of 11 months. The severity of the penalties for illegal cannabis possession will also depend on the intent of the accused. If it is determined that the accused had intent to distribute, then the charges and punishments will increase. Intent to distribute carries the same set of penalties of a felony but will involve greater fines and longer prison sentences.
