Is it legal to grow cannabis plants in my home?

In Washington, it is not legal to grow cannabis plants in your home, even if you have a medical marijuana card. Only licensed marijuana producers and processers, who have been approved by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB), are allowed to legally cultivate and process marijuana. Growing cannabis plants in your home could result in a misdemeanor charge, punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a fine of up to $1,000. However, some patients with a valid medical marijuana card may be legally allowed to grow cannabis plants in their homes. This is only permitted if the patient is unable to purchase marijuana from a licensed producer or processor. Patients with a valid medical marijuana card can possess up to 6 plants, but may possess up to 15 plants if a doctor determines that he or she has an "unusual medical need". Additionally, the plants must be grown in an enclosed and secure area. It is important to note that even if you have a medical marijuana card and are legally allowed to grow cannabis plants in your home, it is still illegal to possess or consume cannabis in any form on the premises of a school, day care center, public park, prison, or any other public place. Therefore, it is important to understand that growing cannabis plants in your home is illegal in Washington unless you have a valid medical marijuana card and meet the additional requirements.
