Is it legal to use cannabis in a federal park?

In the state of California, cannabis is legal but federal law remains unchanged. Even though cannabis is legal in the state of California, it is not legal to use cannabis in a federal park. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), as a federal agency, they are responsible for enforcing the Controlled Substances Act. This act states that cannabis is a Schedule I drug and is illegal for any purpose. The law does not make exceptions for states that have legalized the use of cannabis. In addition, it is important to note that the National Park Service (NPS) is a federal organization, and the NPS does not allow any use of cannabis in national parks. According to their current regulations, “the possession and use of marijuana remains illegal in all national parks, regardless of the current state laws” and that “the possession or use of marijuana in any other form is also prohibited.” Therefore, although it is legal to use cannabis in the state of California, it is not legal to use cannabis in a federal park located in the state of California. It is important to understand the federal laws, as well as the laws of individual states, when it comes to cannabis legalities. If a person is found to be in possession of cannabis in a federal park, they could be subject to criminal penalties and fines.
