Are there any restrictions on the use of cannabis for medical purposes?
Yes, there are restrictions on the use of cannabis for medical purposes in North Carolina. Under North Carolina state law, it is illegal to possess or use cannabis for recreational purposes. However, medical cannabis can be used with a valid doctor’s recommendation and a special ID card from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. To qualify for the medical cannabis program, an individual must have a qualifying medical condition, which include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cancer, HIV/AIDS, severe chronic pain, and other medical conditions. Additionally, the patient must obtain a written certification from a doctor that is registered with the medical cannabis program. Once a patient has a valid certification, they must fill out an application to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and pay the required fee. Once the application is approved, the patient will be issued a medical cannabis ID card that must be presented each time the patient purchases medical cannabis from a dispensary. In North Carolina, medical cannabis is only available in the form of oils, tablets, patches, and lozenges, and cannot be smoked. Additionally, edibles are not permitted, and medical cannabis can only be sold in licensed dispensaries. Patients are also not allowed to cultivate their own cannabis.
