Do I need to report a car accident to the police?
In Wisconsin, the law requires that any car accident resulting in personal injury, death, or property damage of more than $1,000 be reported to the police. Depending on the severity of the accident, the police must be notified within four hours. In addition, if the accident results in more than $1,000 worth of damage to any single vehicle, then the car owner must file a report with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation within 10 days of the accident. There are some exceptions to these rules. Minor accidents that do not meet the criteria above do not need to be reported to the police. In many cases, it is still a good idea to report the accident to your insurance company, even if it does not legally need to be reported to the police. Finally, if a vehicle is damaged but no one is injured, the car can be moved before the police arrive as long as it is moved to a safe location. It is important to remember that all car accidents should be taken seriously and all necessary steps should be taken to prevent further damage and injury. If you are involved in an accident, you should always call the police to make sure the accident is reported. This will not only protect you legally, but it will also help to ensure that everyone involved in the accident is safe.
