What types of injuries are considered catastrophic?

In New York, catastrophic injuries can be defined as any injury sustained that results in long-term or permanent disability. Catastrophic injuries can include physical damage such as the loss of a limb or organ, disfigurement, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and burns. Other issues such as hearing and vision loss, cognitive problems, loss of motor skills, and permanent emotional trauma can also be considered catastrophic. The most common types of catastrophic injuries are those that lead to paralysis or loss of body function. Spinal cord injuries, which are usually due to a severe trauma such as a car accident or a fall, can result in quadriplegia or paraplegia, and can lead to physical disabilities such as paralysis. Brain injuries, which are usually caused by a violent blow to the head, can lead to physical, cognitive, and emotional changes. Burns, which may be caused by coming into contact with fire, chemicals, or electricity, can lead to disfigurement, functional losses, and scarring. Emotional trauma resulting from a traumatic event can also be considered catastrophic and can lead to symptoms such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, or anxiety. Finally, any type of injury that leads to a significant change in an individual’s quality of life may be considered catastrophic.
