What are my rights when disputing a credit card charge?
In North Carolina, consumers have the right to dispute a credit card charge if they believe that the charge is incorrect or unauthorized. If you have a dispute about the charge, you must contact the credit card issuer or the original seller of the item in question. When disputing a credit card charge, you have the right to request a written statement explaining the charge and obtain any other information that the issuer or seller has relating to the charge. If the issuer or seller does not respond to your request for information within 30 days, you may contact the issuing bank to dispute the charge. Upon contacting the bank, you have the right to stop payment on the charge or request a refund. The credit card issuer must investigate the dispute and provide you with a written explanation of the results of their investigation within two billing cycles. If, after the investigation, the credit card issuer still believes that the charge is correct, you may dispute it with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC will investigate the dispute and contact the credit card issuer to ask them to prove that the charge is correct. If the FTC finds in your favor, they will order the credit card issuer to refund the charge. It is important to note that credit card companies are not obligated to refund the disputed charge until the dispute process is complete. Therefore, it is important to be aware of your rights when disputing a credit card charge, and to take action immediately if you believe that the charge is incorrect.
