Can a debt collector call me at work?

In Florida, debt collectors are legally allowed to contact you at work in relation to a debt you owe. However, they are not allowed to do this if they know your employer prohibits personal calls. They are also not allowed to harass you at work by repeatedly calling you and they must limit the amount of information they discuss to other co-workers. Debt collectors are only allowed to contact your employer once, to confirm your place of employment and work schedule. They are not allowed to ask for any other information or discuss the debt further. In addition, debt collectors must abide by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) which states that they can only contact you between the hours of 8am to 9pm. They may not contact you before 8am or after 9pm. If you are being contacted at work by a debt collector, you are entitled to written notice from the collector containing information about the debt, including the amount owed and name of the creditor. You also have the right to dispute the debt in writing within 30 days from the date of the notice. Debt collectors may not threaten or harass you or use any profane language. If you feel that a debt collector has broken any of these laws, contact your local consumer protection office or file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
