What is a credit report freeze?

A credit report freeze, commonly referred to as a credit freeze, is a protection that helps stop identity theft. In Delaware, this type of freeze gives consumers the right to lock their credit reports at the three major credit reporting agencies: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. With this type of freeze in place, businesses, lenders, and other entities cannot access a consumer’s credit report without their permission. This means that potential creditors cannot see a person’s credit score or any other information on their credit report, making it difficult for a thief or someone else to open a line of credit in the consumer’s name. A credit report freeze also helps prevent credit errors from being made and helps stop credit bureaus from selling a consumer’s personal information to other entities. To put a credit report freeze in place, Delaware consumers need to contact each of the three major credit reporting agencies and request that their credit report be frozen. Once the freeze is in place, the agencies will provide a PIN that consumers must use to temporarily lift the freeze if they wish to do so. The Consumer Debt Defense Law in Delaware governs consumer credit report freezes and provides consumers with the right to freeze their credit reports.
