What is a debt collection scam?

A debt collection scam is when someone illegally tries to collect an unpaid debt from you. This typically happens when someone tries to contact you and claim they are a debt collector from a legitimate agency. They will often attempt to get money from you by threatening to ruin your credit or take legal action if the debt isn’t paid. In Maryland, debt collection scammers are against the law. In the Collection Defense Law of Maryland, it states that “No person may use the name of any credit reporting agency, debt collector, or any other person to engage in any debt collection scam.” This means that it is illegal for someone to try and collect an unpaid debt from you if they are not from a legitimate agency. It is important to remember that if you do receive any communication from someone claiming to be a debt collector, verify that the person is legitimate and from a real debt collection agency before you make any payments. Additionally, it is always a good idea to contact the Maryland Office of the Attorney General or the Federal Trade Commission if you feel that you have been the victim of a debt collection scam.
