What is an appearance bond?
An appearance bond is a type of defendant will appear in court when required.">bail bond used in New York to ensure that a criminal defendant appears in court. It is a financial agreement between a surety (often a defendant will appear in court when required.">bail bondsman) and the court that guarantees the defendant will appear for all hearings and trial dates. The surety agrees to pay the court the full face value of the bond if the defendant fails to appear in court. Appearance bonds are widely used by courts in New York as a way to ensure a defendant will appear in court. In order for a defendant to be granted an appearance bond, a judge often requires a surety with a good credit score or other assets to act as the guarantor for the bond. When the defendant appears in court, the surety receives a refund, minus certain fees.
