What is false advertising?
False advertising is when a company misrepresents or exaggerates the benefits of their product or service. It is illegal and can lead to legal action in Washington. False advertising includes a wide variety of deceptive activities, such as making false claims about a product’s performance, making false promises about a product’s quality, or misrepresenting the price or other characteristics of a product. False advertising can be done both intentionally and unintentionally. The Washington State Consumer Protection Act is the main law that regulates false advertising and protects consumers from being taken advantage of. The act requires businesses to act in good faith, truthfully, and not engage in any deceptive practices. Businesses are also prohibited from using any form of deceptive marketing or advertising, such as bait and switch tactics or unfair pricing. Consumers who have been misled or taken advantage of by false advertising can file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office or take the matter to court. Businesses found guilty of false advertising can be subject to fines or even imprisonment.
